While sometimes referred to as a single political entity, the Cirrhonian (sir-oh-nee-uhn) Provinces are more accurately described as a loose coalition of many small provinces called dukedoms, each led by a duke, which make up most of the eastern continent. Depending on who you ask, there are as few as twenty all the way up to hundreds of dukedoms, and their borders are constantly shifting and changing as territory is disputed, fought over, and ceded between dukedoms.

Some few hundred years ago, the most powerful dukes of the Provinces banded together to form the Grand Counsel, an alliance of dukedoms with the power to mediate disputes between the other dukedoms on the continent, forming the Cirrhonian Provinces as they are known today. Once a year, the Grand Counsel meets to perform their duties, usually hosted by one of the larger dukedoms.

While Cirrhonian land encompasses most of the types of climates in Io, they are perhaps best known for the vast, rolling plains of central Cirrhonia, a land said to have been blessed by the gods of nature to be highly suitable for agriculture. The bounty of the vast lands of Cirrhonia are able to feed the just-as-vast population of Cirrhonia, home to myriad cultures and peoples.
